The newsreader Ikarus, developed by Firstload, is "the great unknown" in the overall comparison. This is primarily due to the fact that Ikarus is only available in German. This user-friendly newsreader has both SSL encryption and the option of working with NZB files as standard. In addition, Ikarus' programmers also equipped the newsreader with several other features, such as a free chat feature and a rating system for binary files. However, Ikarus is not an option for Mac and LINUX users. The newsreader has only been developed for Windows and is therefore off limits for users of other platforms.

Ikarus offers its users a large range of features. However, the newsreader only runs well and error-free in combination with a Firstload subscription. Ikarus is unfortunately not available for Mac OSX or Linux. However, its additional features such as activating the First download flat rate or filtering popular newsgroups certainly mean that Ikarus can hold its own as a solid and user-friendly Usenet client. This newsreader is suited to both newcomers and advanced users.
